“When birth is working you leave it alone”

Meet the Midwife

Jessica Hernandez is a Trained Direct Entry Community Midwife.

My midwifery journey began in 2018 after witnessing the birth of my niece. I knew then that I wanted there to be a change in how women in the south were treated during birth. Particularly in my home state of Mississippi where maternal and neonatal mortality rates were consistently rising while rural labor and delivery facilities continued to close. I began my midwife training, learning under midwives across Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama. Symoltainiouly I studied under Mercy In Action College of Midwifery where I learned about specifically midwifery in rural or developing areas. I am passionate about making sure women feel cared for and respected during their pregnancy, birth and postpartum periods. I firmly believe that the integration of midwifery care will aid in Mississippis recovery by empowering mothers through education and kindness. During my training I became a mother to two beautiful children both born safely at home and wife o my ever supportive husband who shares my goal of ministering to our community through easy access midwifery care.

Midwife Model of care

The Midwifery Model of Care is built upon the following principles

1.) Mother Centered Individualized Continuous Care for pregnancy, birth and Postpartum.

2.) Mother - Midwife partnered decision Making

3.) Normalizing and optimizing the uninterrupted or unmediated physiological, biological and cultural process that is pregnancy, birth and postpartum

4.) The use of evidence based interventions only when necessary.

Mother centered care

Mother centered care is built on two pillars. That is ongoing education and ongoing consent. The midwifery model recognizes the mother as capable of making informed decisions for herself and her baby and prioritizes providing well rounded education to the mother on all recommendations for monitoring the health of the mother baby diad. The midwifery model of care recognizes that consent is constantly ongoing and can be recanted at any time. Midwives pride themselves on prioritizing verbal communication and consent for all procedures provided to the mother throughout her care. We recognize that not all procedures and recommendations are right for every family and honor the mothers ability to take charge of her care and request or deny any procedures or interventions the midwife may have to offer her. The Midwifery focus is to priced up to date evidence based education to all families especially in regards to the uninterrupted and unmediated processes of pregnancy, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding. By providing this education on the natural physiological process mothers and families can be empowered to trust their bodies when everything is operating as it should and to seek higher care when everything is not. To quote the NCOM “every woman deserves a midwife and some will need a doctor”.
